Mid-Year Shareholder Letter
The mid-year mark for 24Hour Journal introduces new and inspiring content for the work-from-home movement.
Dear 24Hour Journal Shareholder.
Six months into 2024, one of my observations is that the global macro economy is still not yet settled from the COVID-19 pandemic. Yes, there are underlying signs that economic stabilization is happening, like a lower unemployment rate or flattening inflation. But if we peek under the rug and focus on individuals, we see a mystery of depleted savings accounts, high credit card debt, and negative sentiment about the future.
In the wise words of Sun Tzu in The Art of War, “In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity.” The best opportunity resulting from the pandemic is the affirmation that remote work is not detrimental to productivity. Are we still learning to optimize our remote working habits? Absolutely.
In the following months, the team at 24Hour Journal will focus on the good, bad, and ugly of remote work, starting with working at home. We’ll review products, interview remote workers, share our personal and professional experiences about online platforms, optimize our health, and learn to manage money.
Our upcoming remote work content intends to inspire you with entrepreneurial ideas. While our team will do most of the heavy lifting, any insight, criticism, or feedback is welcome from our community of Shareholders. Let’s become as financially independent as possible, minimize our reliance on the State, and lead others to a prosperous lifestyle.
That said, here are factors affecting the Work-From-Home lifestyle.

The work-from-home movement has exploded, offering millennials and Gen Zers unprecedented flexibility and freedom. But with great power comes great responsibility. While ditching the commute and setting your own hours sounds idyllic, maintaining productivity and well-being in your home office requires a strategic approach. Here's your ultimate guide to conquering the work-from-home life, from conquering cravings to crafting a killer routine.
Fueling Your Focus: Food for Thought
Sheryl Sandberg of Meta Platforms META 0.00%↑ hit the nail on the head: "There's a lot of value in people being able to focus and work from home." But focus can be elusive when faced with the constant allure of your fridge. Here's how to leverage your home kitchen for peak performance:
Pro: Escape the office vending machine trap! Prepare healthy meals that fuel your body and mind. Enjoy flexible meal scheduling and ditch the 12:00 pm lunch rush.
Con: Beware of the "pantry raid." Unstructured eating patterns and mindless snacking can derail your energy levels. Emotional eating due to stress or boredom can lead to unhealthy choices.
Tame the Treats:
Plan your meals and snacks: Stock your fridge with healthy options like fruits, vegetables, and lean protein sources. Prepare portion-controlled snacks like nuts and yogurt to avoid overindulging.
Schedule your meals: Treat mealtimes with the same respect as a client meeting. This helps maintain a healthy body and a focused mind.
Beyond the Desk: Move It or Lose It
Jack Dorsey, former CEO of Twitter and current CEO of Block SQ 0.00%↑, championed employee autonomy, allowing them to work from "wherever they live." But working remotely can lead to a surprisingly sedentary lifestyle. Here's how to stay active and avoid the pitfalls of a desk-bound existence:
Pro: Ditch the commute and use that extra time for a quick workout! Exercise is a proven stress reliever, boosting focus and overall well-being.
Con: Lack of motivation can lead to skipped workouts. Poor posture and ergonomics can cause aches and pains.
Get Your Body Moving:
Schedule your workouts: Treat exercise like an important meeting and block time in your calendar.
Embrace mini-breaks: Set reminders to get up, stretch, and walk around throughout the day. Invest in a standing desk (Richard Branson would approve!) to alternate between sitting and standing.
Gear Up for Success: Essential Work-From-Home Products
While Tesla’s TSLA 0.00%↑ Elon Musk might disagree (sorry, Elon!), creating a dedicated workspace with the right tools can significantly enhance your productivity. Here are some must-haves:
Ergonomic Chair: Invest in a chair that provides proper back and neck support to avoid future discomfort.
Noise-Canceling Headphones: These headphones help you drown out distractions and focus on the task at hand, just as Mary Barra of GM 0.00%↑ might suggest.
Wireless Keyboard and Mouse: Declutter your workspace and gain flexibility in positioning your equipment.
Large Monitor: See your work more efficiently with a large monitor, which is especially helpful for spreadsheet warriors.
Standing Desk (Optional): While not for everyone, a standing desk can help counteract the adverse health effects of prolonged sitting.
The Power of Routine: Friend or Foe?
Satya Nadella of Microsoft MSFT 0.00%↑ highlights the importance of in-person interaction, but a well-structured routine can be a game-changer for remote workers. Here's how to create a routine that works for you:
Routine Benefits: Reduced decision fatigue frees up mental resources, while familiar routines allow for autopilot mode on mundane tasks. This boosts focus and memory. Consistent sleep schedules lead to deeper sleep, and routines can help integrate healthy habits for a more balanced life.
Routine Drawbacks: Strict routines can stifle creativity and become monotonous. Overly rigid schedules might not accommodate unexpected events, leading to stress.
Craft Your Ideal Routine:
Flexible Framework: Build in wiggle room for unforeseen circumstances or the need to switch things up.
Variety is Key: Schedule activities throughout the week that stimulate different parts of your brain and body.
Regular Review: Assess your routine and adjust as needed to maintain its effectiveness and avoid boredom.
Remember: Your routine should be a tool that empowers you, not a cage that confines you.
