A fund is a group of stocks that allow for diversification and minimization of risk. There are two primary types of funds available in the stock market — ETFs (exchange traded funds) and mutual funds.
Exchange traded funds have gained more popularity in the last decade as these are funds that mirror the transactional benefits of trading individual stocks. An investor, or better yet a trader, can buy and sell ETFs at market prices thereby taking advantage of any immediate upswings and downswings in the price.
Mutual funds, on the other hand, are not as transactional. While not polar opposite to the ETF, mutual funds are transacted at the end of the trading day. This means if you decide to purchase shares in a mutual fund at 8am, the actual purchase or sale of this mutual fund will take place at the final price at the close of the day, occurs at 4pm ET.
A watchlist is a virtual fund that allows an investor/trader to track and monitor the progress of individual stocks.
